Romanian Tax Authority penalized EUR 6.7 mln for not repaying VAT on time

Romania’s Tax Authority ANAF needs to pay interest of over EUR 6.7 million for not reimbursing the VAT on time to the edible oil producer Cargill. The High Court of Cassation and Justice has dismissed the Tax Authority’s appeal against a decision of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which had ruled that the company had the right to receive interest of over EUR 6.7 million from ANAF, reports local Hotnews.ro. The dispute began in 2009, when the Tax Authority refused to pay interest to Cargill, after having delayed for more than a year the company’s demand to have the VAT reimbursed. The VAT amounted to over RON 100 million (EUR 22.3 million). Cargill has been active in Romania since 1996, is headquartered in Bucharest and now has around 900 employees in 23 locations in the country. The company has activities in grain and oilseed trading, bottled and refined oil production, and animal nutrition. editor@romania-insider.com
