Romanian shipyard Daewoo Mangalia builds largest auto carrier in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean

Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries, the largest Romanian shipyard, recently delivered the first ship specialized in motor vehicle sea transportation ever built in Romania, according to an announcement made by the company. This kind of ship is generally known as a Pure Car Truck Carrier. This particular one that was built din Mangalia is able to carry 6,500 vehicles and is the largest ship of this kind that was ever built in the Black Sea or the Mediterranean basin. The ship is 199.9 meters long and 32.26 meters wide and has a maximum speed of over 16 knots, according to the shipbuilder. The ship was named “HOEGH Jacksonville” and its charterer is Norwegian group Hoegh Autoliners, one of the global leaders in the transport of motor vehicles by sea. The ship’s owner is Norwegian company Ocean Yield. The contract between the Norwegian company and the Romanian shipyard was signed in September 2012 and covers two such ships. This was an important step for Daewoo Mangalia, which was specialized mainly in building container ships and bulk carriers. The ship was built in just 12 months and the entire process, including its projection, took 19 months. It was fully equipped at Daewoo Mangalia, which included the installation of the equipment necessary for motor vehicle sea transport. Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries is part of Korean group Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. In 2012, the company had a turnover of EUR 188 million and a EUR 50 million loss.
