Romanian PM: 750 villages will have broadband Internet this year

The Ro-Net project, which brings high-speed internet to a few hundred villages in Romania’s remote areas, has shown some failures along the way, but the 750 villages that are included in the program will have access to Internet by the end of the year, said the Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos. “We have had and we still have money from European funds,” said the Prime Minister, referring to the Ro-Net project. “In the 2007-2013 financial period very few money was spent. There were failures in certain sections.” The project’s cost is some EUR 84 million, EUR 56 million of which should be covered with EUR funds. Telecommunications company Telekom is implementing the program. In May 2015, the company announced that the project would be due by the end of October 2015. However, Telekom missed the deadline and the company’s former CEO Nikolai Beckers complained about the authorities’ “bureaucracy, incompetence and inertia", which the company faced when implementing the Ro-Net project. editor@romania-insider.com
