Romanian National Bank to spend EUR 2.3 mln on revamping former governor’s manor house

Romania’s National Bank (BNR) plans to revamp an old manor house which belonged to Mihail Oromolu, who was BNR’s Governor from 1922 to 1926. The manor is located in the Pausesti-Maglasi village in Valcea county and was built in 1916. The manor, which is surrounded by a 14,000 sqm park, is now BNR’s property. BNR launched an auction to find a contractor for renovation work; construction companies can submit their offers by September 8. The BNR plans to open a cultural center in the mansion. The Oromolu manor was designed by Romanian architect Petre Antonescu, in the neo-Romanian style. It also has elements that are specific to fortified houses in the Oltenia region. Petre Antonescu also designed Mihai Oromolu’s mansion in Bucharest, a building which is located in Piata Victoriei, next to the Government’s building. The Bucharest mansion was taken over by South-African real estate fund NEPI, which wants to revamp it and to develop an office building next to it. Mihai Oromolu was born in Dragasani, in Valcea county, where current BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu is also from. Oromolu was the county prefect in Dolj, a minister in the Romanian Government and then BNR Governor. editor@romania-insider.com
