Romanian media scandal triggers change of Education minister proposal just before Parliament hearings

One day before the proposed members of the Romanian Government were to appear in front of the Parliament, the designated Prime Minister Victor Ponta replaced the Education Minister proposal. On Sunday evening (May 6 ), Ponta nominated Ioan Mang to take the Education seat, replacing Corina Dumitrescu, who had been at the centre of a media scandal involving her CV. The media spotted several grammar and spelling mistakes in her CV and, after a short investigation, concluded Dumitrescu did not study at Stanford University, as she claimed in her CV, where the university name was also misspelled. In response, the minister said somebody else typed her CV and her only fault was not checking it before submitting it publicly. About the Stanford University studies, she said she had registered under her maiden name. The new proposed minister and the rest of the cabinet will go though hearings in the Romanian Parliament today – Monday, May 7 – when the MPs are also supposed to vote in the afternoon. Victor Ponta counts on a majority of votes in the Parliament and hopes for the new Government to be sworn in tonight. editor@romania-insider.com
