Romanian farmers stand to lose EUR 2 bln because of the drought

The drought in Romania has severely affected crops this year and has caused local farmers losses of almost EUR 2 billion, representing sunk investments. This will lead to an increase in the prices of Romanian food products, said Laurentiu Baciu, president of the League of Associations of Agricultural Producers in Romania (LAPAR), quoted by Hotnews.ro. In the most affected regions, the corn crops are ruined almost completely, whereas more than half of the sunflower crops will be lost. The wheat harvest will be half compared to last year. The worst situation is in eastern Romania, in the Vaslui, Bacau and Botosani counties. Last week, Baciu said that authorities should give farmers a state aid of EUR 1 billion because of the drought.
