Romania wants to spend EUR 9 mln on expanding electronic road tax system nationwide

Romania's Highways and National Roads Company (CNADNR) will spend some EUR 8.9 million on nationwide expansion of the issuance and control system for road tax, which is now collected mainly through 'rovinieta'. Drivers will be able to pay road tax by text message with the new system, which will expand during a second stage. With the expanded system, Romanian authorities aim to increase the amount raised by road tax by 25 percent for certain types of cars.

The first stage was developed with a budget of EUR 8 million in 2010 and 2011 to reach a minimum starting point for the system, which features fixed and mobile control areas. Novensys Corporation/UTI Systems developed the first stage of the project. A second stage will expand this system to a national level, by adding more control points, hardware and software infrastructure, introducing new modules for the IT&C system and equipment for a new call center. CNADNR will organize a tender and awaits offers until May 30. The contract will span over two months. The road tax ' rovinieta' was initially a sticker placed on the car's windshield, but was replaced with an electronic version. The road tax can be paid in most gas stations in Romania and at Romanian Post Officies.
