Romania to upgrade railway, ports with EUR 1.3 bln from the EU

Romania’s Transport Ministry was recently allotted EUR 1.3 billion in European funds, money which will be used to upgrade a railway section and several ports, according to the Ministry. “Following negotiations between representatives of the European Commission and Member States, a EUR 10 billion transfer from the Cohesion Fund to the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) was agreed in order to accelerate the completion of priority transport projects located on the TEN-T network,” reads a statement of the Romanian Ministry. Romania’s share amounts to some EUR 1.3 billion which will be used to “develop projects on the two corridors which cross Romania and are part of the priority development areas of the European Union, namely the Rhine-Danube Corridor and the East/East-Mediterranean Corridor”. One of the projects to be funded through this program is the rehabilitation of Craiova-Calafat railway, which ensures connection to the Calafat-Vidin bridge, as an integrated part of the East/East-Mediterranean Corridor. The cost of the project amounts to EUR 400 million. The rest of the sum, of up to EUR 1.3 million, will primarily be used to modernize the 16 Danube and maritime ports, according to the Romanian Ministry.
