Romania ranks 5th for fruit & vegetable production in EU

Romania ranked fifth in the European Union for vegetable production last year, with 151,000 hectares of cultivated land. This represented 7.3% of the area cultivated with vegetables in the EU. Italy ranked first, with 20% of the surface cultivate with vegetables, followed by Spain (17%), France (11%), and Poland (9%), according to data from EU's statistical office Eurostat. Romania’s production of cucumbers amounted to 130,000 tons, namely 5.4% of the total cucumber production in EU. The tomato production reached over 460,000 tons last year, and represented 2.6% of the EU production. Italy, on the other hand, had a production of tomatoes of over 6.4 million tons. Cherry production in Romania reached 7.7% of the total EU production. Romania also ranked fifth in EU when it comes to fruit production, with a total cultivated area of 150,000 hectares. This represented 6.2% of the area cultivated with fruits in the EU. However, Romania’s apple production accounted for only 3.65% of the EU apple production. Poland recorded the highest production of apples and cherries in the EU whereas Spain cultivated most peaches and strawberries. editor@romania-insider.com
