Romania imposes income tax on private schools and kindergartens

Private education institutions, except for private universities, will pay taxes on income starting next year, according to the new Fiscal Code. The private education institutions have been exempt from paying a tax on income until now, based on the old Fiscal Code. However, the number of private pre-university education institutions is extremely low compared to the number of private universities. The state pre-school network had almost 1,200 kindergartens and almost 570,000 kids enrolled, as of 2014, whereas the private sector included only 310 kindergartens attended by some 17,000 kids, reports local Profit.ro. The public primary and secondary education had over 4,045 units, of which about 3,984 were public and 61 were private. In 2014, 97.9% of high school students attended public schools, and only 2.1% went to private high schools. The number of students enrolled in private universities, however, accounted for 15% of the total number of students. editor@romania-insider.com
