Romania has the highest electricity losses in EU

The electricity losses in the national transportation network managed by Transelectrica and the distribution networks managed by the 8 regional operators in Romania were twice the EU average in 2014, according to data from the World Energy Council. The electricity loss rate in the national transportation and distribution networks reached 13.4% in 2014, compared to the EU average of 6.7%. The world average stands at 8.6%. Romania ranked first for the highest loss rate, followed by Bulgaria (12%), and Croatia (11.2%), reports local Profit.ro. Luxembourg had the best performance in 2014, with a loss rate of only 1.9% of all the electricity transmitted and distributed in the country. Iceland (2.1%) and Finland (3%) came next. The small size of these countries help them have more efficient power transmission grids. However, even a large country like Germany had an electricity loss rate of only 3.7% of its total power consumption.
