Romania’s biggest company is only 16th in the regional ranking

Car producer Automobile Dacia, Romania’s biggest company, has climbed to the 16th position in the top 500 companies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) based on their turnover, made by credit insurance company Coface. Dacia was 17th in last year’s ranking. Romania is the fourth biggest economy in the region and has 59 companies in this year’s ranking, which is based on 2014 turnovers, three more than last year. Among the largest local companies that were included in the Coface CEE Top 500 Companies are oil groups OMV Petrom, Rompetrol, Lukoil, and Mol Romania, gas producer Romgaz, retailers Kaufland, Carrefour, Auchan, Mega Image, DIY retailer Dedeman, as well as electricity and utilities companies, grain traders, automotive producers and others. OMV Petrom, the second largest Romanian company by turnover, went down to 22nd in the ranking (from 18th last year), as its revenues went down on lower oil prices. The last Romanian company that made it in the top 500 is fertilizer producer Azomures, on 497. The aggregate turnover of the Romanian companies in the ranking was EUR 52.3 billion, in 2014, standing for 9.1% of the total turnover. The companies in the top 500 CEE generated revenues of EUR 572 billion in 2014, 2.1% higher than in 2013. Poland remains the region’s leader, with 176 companies in top 500, which generated revenues of over EUR 226 billion in 2014 (40% of the turnover of the top 500 companies). Poland also has the biggest company in the region, oil group PKN Orlen, which had a turnover of EUR 25 billion last year. Hungary ranks second with 73 companies, whereas the Czech Republic comes third, with 65 companies. The full report is available here.
