Romania, among the least energy dependent EU countries

The European Union’s energy dependence reached 53.4% in 2014, according to EU’s statistical office Eurostat. This means that the EU had to import more than half of the energy it consumed. Romania was one of the EU countries least dependent on energy imports. Its energy dependence rate reached 17%. Estonia ranked first, with an energy dependence rate of only 8.9%. It was followed by Denmark (12.8%). The most dependent countries were Malta (97.7%), Luxembourg (96.6%), Cyprus (93.4%), Ireland (85.3%), Belgium (80.1%), and Lithuania (77.9%). The European Union’s energy dependence rose from 44.2% in 1990 to 53.4% in 2014. Romania, on the other side, together with other eight member state, recorded the lowest level of energy dependence after 1990. For Romania, the energy imports dropped from 34.3% in 1990 to 17% in 2014. editor@romania-insider.com
