Only 5 percent of the buildings erected in Romania after 1990 are considered energy efficient, found a recent report issued by the Green Buildings Association in Romania, in partnership with NAI Romania and Construction21. The report found that some 2 million sqm of build space can be considered energy efficient, which represents an increase from the year 2000, when the level was zero.
The report includes 60 projects, offices, residences, hotels and retail spaces, P&G's factory in Urlati, as well as five projects which are still underway. The report underlines that the green industry in Romania is still in its infancy, and many financial institutions do not offer products tailored for covering the costs of green buildings. However, internationally, institutional investors and real estate funds have severe restrictions in buying properties which do not have a green certification. The green buildings covered by the report are as follows:
