Relics of 17th century Romanian Prince brought back to local monastery

The relics of Romanian martyr Constantin Brancoveanu, who was the Prince of Wallachia between 1688 and 1714, were recently brought back to the Hurezi Monastery in Romania’s Valcea county, 300 years after his death by decapitation in Constantinople. The relics were brought by a clerical delegation led by the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church and were received with military honors, reports local Agerpres. Hundreds of priests and thousands of people attended the ceremony. Prior to the move, his remains were buried in a church in Bucharest. Part of the relics will permanently remain at Hurezi, the monastery founded by Brancoveanu in 1690, and the place where he wanted to be buried. Brancoveanu was made a martyr by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992. The monastery has been inscribed by UNESCO on its list of World Heritage Sites. Irina Popescu, irina.popescu@romania-insider.com
