PM: Romania does not have shale gas, we fought over nothing

Romania does not seem to have shale gas reserves, so ‘it had fought over something it does not have’, said Prime Minister Victor Ponta on TV on Sunday. The PM did not want to give more details, according to Mediafax. A month ago, Energy Minister Constantin Nita was saying Romania can be the main player in the energy field, and most countries will have to accept shale gas exploitation. Romania would therefore have an extraordinary advantage, as it has all possible energy resources. American company Chevron finalized in July its exploration for shale gas in Siliştea-Pungeşti in Northern Romania, and said it would analyze the data. The company has three more environment agreements to explore for shale gas in the region, in the Vaslui county. A year ago, locals and NGOs protested against Chevron starting shale gas exploration in Romania, with some of the protests having turned violent. editor@romania-insider.com
