Painkiller tops best-selling OTC drug brands in Romania

The painkiller Nurofen, the aspirin for the circulatory system Aspenter, and the fever reducer Parasinus were the best-selling OTC (over-the-counter) drugs in Romania in 2014, according to market research company Cegedim, quoted by Economica.net. Nurofen, which has ibuprofen as its active substance, generated EUR 29.9 million in sales, last year. British group Reckitt Benckiser produces the Nurofen brand. Aspenter, which is aspirin in a lower dose, recommended in the prophylactic treatment of heart conditions, sold EUR 13.2 million. Local drug producer Terapia, part of Indian group Ranbaxy, makes Aspenter. Parasinus, which is paracetamol and helps reduce fever, had sales of EUR 9.4 million. Parasinus is a GSK brand. The sales values are based on the drugs’ purchase prices by pharmacies, not on the final sale prices. OTC drugs are pharmaceutical products that sell without a prescription. editor@romania-insider.com
