About 12.5 million people lived in Romania’s urban areas on January 1, 2015, and 9.7 million lived in villages. The urban population amounted to 56.4%, down 0.1% from January 2014. The number of Romanians who live in cities decreased by 50,700 year-on-year, while villages also lost 16,300 inhabitants, according to the National Institute of Statistics. With its 2.1 million inhabitants, Bucharest hosted 16.7% of the urban population and 9.4% of the country’s population. Iasi comes next, with 357,000 people, Timisoara - with 333,000, Cluj-Napoca with 322,000 and Constanta with 319,000. editor@romania-insider.com
