One in four Romanians thinks that drinking more beers is a sign of masculinity

Romanians prefer blonde beer and 27% of local beer consumers think that drinking several beers in a row is a sign of masculinity, according to a recent study conducted by the Romanian Audit Bureau Transmedia BRAT, cited by local Mediafax. For over 30% of Romanians, drinking beer with friends is a very important way to relax and interact socially. Most of Romanians, namely 70%, don’t refuse a beer with friends no matter how busy they are. In terms of frequent consumers of beer with alcohol, the percentage is high in the case of men – 79%. Women prefer non-alcoholic beer and some 30% of the Romanian women drink this kind of beer once a week. The study also reveals that one third of Romanians in the urban areas drink less than a liter of beer per week, and most of them drink it in the summer and autumn. Among beer consumers, 20% drink over 3 liters of beer a week during summer, the percentage dropping to 16% in winter. Romanians consume less beer in cafes, compared to bars and clubs. Over 30% of those going to cafes regularly drink beer with alcohol at least once per week, while 7% chose the non-alcoholic beer. In bars and clubs, 44% drink beer with alcohol at least once per week, a lower percentage of 13% choosing the non-alcoholic one. Most of beer consumers, namely 93% prefer blonde beer, while 15% drink dark beer. Beer sales sink in Romania, brewers pin it on higher taxes. Irina Popescu, irina.popescu@romania-insider.com
