Number of tourists up 7.7% in Romania in February

The number of Romanian and foreign tourists in Romania increased by 7.7% in February compared to the same month last year, reaching 679,100. By comparison, the tourism sector saw a double-digit growth in January, namely 13.4%, according to data released yesterday by the National Statistics Institute (INS). About 543,500 Romanian tourists checked into local accommodation units in February, up 8.5% over the same month in 2016. The number of foreign tourists reached 135,600, up 4.5% year-on-year. Most of the foreign tourists came from Europe in February, namely some 104,700. In total, Romania recorded 271,089 foreign tourists in January and February, up 6.9% year-on-year. Most tourists came from Germany (29,983), followed by Italy (29,661), Israel (27,423), and the UK (18,144). The number of overnight stays in local hotels and guesthouses increased by 6.4% year-on-year in the first two months of the year, to 2.54 million. editor@romania-insider.com
