New group of Peace Corps volunteers starts two-year mission in Romania

A new group of 44 Peace Corps volunteers will start their two-year mission in Romania this summer, the US Embassy to Romania has announced. The volunteers will be sworn in on Friday, August 6, at the US Embassy in Bucharest. The Peace Corps volunteers have been trained for the last 11 weeks in Targoviste, where they learned Romanian language, local culture and history, as well as teaching methods they could use in their activity here. The Peace Corps Romania started in 1991 and 1,000 volunteers came to the country ever since. There are currently 81 such volunteers working in every county in Romania. There are four types of programs within the Peace Corps mission: teaching English as a foreign language, Economic development of the community, Institutional Development, Environmental management and education. The Peace Corps was founded in 1961 by the then US president John Kennedy. Over 180,000 Peace Corps volunteers have worked in 134 countries so far.
