New age record: 12 year-old Romanian climbs the Aconcagua peak

Young Romanian climber Dor Geta Popescu, aged 12, has climbed Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia, at 6,961 meters, and the highest point in the Western and Southern Hemispheres. She is now the youngest climber that has ever reached this peak. Aconcagua, which is one of the 7 Summits, is located in the Mendoza Province, Argentina. The Romanian has set the new age record on February 6, reports local Mediafax. She will return to Romania this week. According to Altitudine Mountain Sports Club, both female age records for the Aconcagua peak are held by Romanians: on the normal route by Dor Geta Popescu and on the Polish Glacier route by Crina Coco Popescu (since 2009). In December last year, Dor Geta Popescu has set a new age record for Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano.

By the age of 14, the Romanian wants to complete the 7 Volcanoes and the 7 Summits circuits. She has already climbed three of the peaks in the 7 Summits circuit, namely Aconcagua (6,961 meters – February 6), Elbrus (5,642 meters – August 15, 2015), and Kilimanjaro

(5,895 meters – July 16, 2015).
