National Liberal Party breaks the news: no Magyar Union reps in new Romanian Government

The Magyar Union in Romania (UDMR) will most likely not be part of the new Government, as it had been initially suggested by the Social Liberal Union co-head Victor Ponta. The National Liberal Party (PNL) representatives said on Monday morning (December 17 ) that the new Government will not include the UDMR. The PM's message was however less direct, pointing out to ongoing negotiations with UDMR, and suggesting an internal conflict inside the USL. This will be the first time in a very long period when the UDMR has not entered the Government. The Social Democratic Party (PSD), whose leader Victor Ponta mentioned the negotiations with UDMR immediately after winning the elections, is yet to confirm the decision at the union level. PNL and PSD will together work on creating the new Government, after the incumbent PM Victor Ponta was nominated to create the new executive. The PM previously said he would like to form a coalition with the Magyar Union (UDMR). Although no official decision has yet been made, Ponta said he wants to form an inclusive government of “unification” that represents all interests in Romania. The UDMR, representing the Hungarian minority in Romania, has been part of almost all governments in recent years, either led by the National Liberal Party (PNL) or by the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL). In the current Government, also led by the USL, the UDMR however does not have any ministers, as the political group was part of the Government overthrown by the USL earlier this year. editor@romania-insider.com
