Letters from readers: Romania, be careful who you make friends with!

We received the e-mail below from one of our readers, Peter Fay from Portsmouth, England "I do not wish to be a portrayer of doom, but.... I think some staff at Romania-Insider.com are quite knowledgeable of the fact that I am very much pro-Romania. Therefore, I am a little worried that nobody appears to have questioned the odd and high level of investment in Romania by a former invader... communist China. The first three news items on today's newsletter were, “China wants to invest in Cernavoda nuclear plant”, “Chinese company ZTE (telecommunications) want to train people in Bucharest” and “China wishes to build a ‘Private’ metro line in Bucharest”. I must ask the obvious questions. WHY do the Chinese want a Nuclear interest in Romania? WHY do the Chinese want a telecoms interest in Romania? Plus, WHY a ‘Private’ metro line in Bucharest? Surely my imagination is not being over-active...? Now, I will accept that I may have watched too many “cold war” and “spy” movies. However, whilst my imagination may be very active and sometimes creative... is NOBODY suspicious? When I was in Sighisoara two weeks ago, one of the postcards I sent was to a Chinese friend in Anglia. So I am not a xenophobe. However, why do you think HE has a business in Anglia? Maybe he thinks communism is not his idea of a good business! Romania’s last brush with communism is still memorable to many natives. However, even Russia has some nice people... one of the nicest of them actually works in your offices! Please... Romania, be very, very careful who you make friends with!" He discovered Bucharest two years ago, after chatting online to a Romanian. “I instantly fell in love with Bucuresti. Since then I have discovered the delightful countryside, sights to see and wonderful people, all over Romania. I will no longer holiday anywhere else. Unless I win the lottery that is. Then I will live in Romania and holiday elsewhere. :) Unfortunately, I may live in Bucuresti, but I will always be truly British. But that should be an advantage,” he writes Romania-Insider.com. “I have friends of many skin colors, races, creeds, religions from around the world. I do not dislike any breed of people, per se. Being postwar born British, I have always known immigrants. I have learn that before you blame anyone for anything, you should discover the root of the problem that upsets you,” he concludes.
