ING Bank: Romanian currency untouched by riots but further unrest could bring depreciation

The Romanian currency could depreciate if the street protests continue in the country, even though so far the Romanian Leu was not affected by the riots, according to a report from ING Bank.

“The RON does not seem to be affected by the recent events, even though they have attracted a lot of attention from the international media, because investors have become less sensitive to such events over the last couple of years. The national currency has the reputation of a strangely stable currency and polls suggest the governing party will probably no longer run Romania after general elections towards the end of the year,” according to the report. Should protests continue, a power void might appear, which would complicate the future of the existing agreement for international financing, one of Romania's important positive issues. Then, the Romanian currency would see pressure and depreciate, ING reports.
