Eurobarometer: Romanians use public transport and walk rather than drive

A recent Eurobarometer survey reveals that only 40% of Romanians use cars most often as a means of transportation on a typical day, below the EU28 average of 54%. Romanians are among the top three in the EU for using public transport and walking as means of daily transport. When it comes to using the car daily, the ranking is led by Cyprus with 85% of the population preferring this means of transport, followed by Ireland with 73% and Slovenia – 71%, while Romania – 40%, Latvia – 38% and Hungary – 33% come at the bottom of the list. When it comes to urban public transport, respondents in Poland and Romania were amongst the most likely to have said they used this means of transportation most often on a typical day - both 29%. Latvia ranks first in this category, with a figure of 31%. Romanians are also in top three when it comes to walking, as 23% of respondents mentioned walking most often on a typical day, the percentage being similar to the one in Poland. Romania is surpassed by Spain and Bulgaria, with 25% each, while the EU28 average is of 14%. Only 7% of Romanian respondents mentioned biking as the most often means of transport used on a typical day, the figure dropping to just 1% when it comes to motorbike or moped, or the train.
