EU Commissioner: Romania avoids losing EUR 750 mln

Romania managed to avoid losing almost EUR 750 million worth of European funds from the 2007-2013 programme. The Juncker Commission has played an important role, because it has accepted the retroactive funding for certain projects, said European Commissioner Corina Cretu. She created last year a working group within the General Directorate for Regional Policy to identify possible solutions to hurry the absorption of European funds in Romania. The European Commission has also blocked European funds of EUR 144 million for Romania, as it suspected irregularities, Corina Cretu said. The reasons include fraud suspicions or the Romanian authorities’ inability to check the projects. Romanian authorities need to come up with efficient solutions to better manage the European funds, she added. editor@romania-insider.com
