EC approves EUR 83 mln financing for Bucharest’s subway line 4 expansion

The European Commission approved on June 4 a financial contribution of EUR 83 million from the Cohesion Fund for the expansion of Bucharest’s subway line 4. The project called “Expansion of metro line 4, Bazilescu Park-Straulesti section” is part of the Operational Programme on Transport. The project has a total value of EUR 97.7 million. The new segment has a length of 1.89 km and includes two metro stations. According to estimations, over 3.63 million people will use the segment annually. “The 50,000 inhabitants of Bucurestii Noi and Chitila neighborhoods, which will have direct access to the metro system, will be the main beneficiaries of the new infrastructure,” said European Commissioner Corina Cretu. Those living in north-western Bucharest and in Mogosoaia, Buftea and Chitila cities, will also benefit from this expansion. Bucharest subway operator Metrorex will manage the new section.
