DB Schenker Rail CEO says train speed in Romania should go up to sustain economic development

Romania has great potential for railway freight transport but needs significant investments in railway infrastructure in order to align medium train speed to international standards, according to Eduard Iancu, CEO of DB Schenker Romania, one of the largest local freight carriers. According to recent data from the Transport Ministry, medium freight train speed in Romania is 28 kilometers per hour. Iancu, quoted in Ziarul Financiar, said that rising exports and larger outputs by local factories increase the demand for railway fright transport. His company plans to extend its fleet of wagons and locomotives this year. DB Schenker Rail Romania, which is part of German group Deutsche Bahn, currently has a fleet of 50 locomotives and 2,500 wagons and had a turnover of EUR 27 million in 2013. editor@romania-insider.com
