Romania's Consumer Protection Authority wants to close one of Bucharest's busiest subway stations

Romania’s National Consumer Protection Authority (ANPC) has decided on Thursday, January 28, to fine Bucharest metro operator Metrorex with RON 20,000 (some EUR 4,400) and to temporarily close down the Piata Victoriei subway station. The ANPC inspectors checked the Piata Victoriei metro station on Thursday after they received a complaint from a woman who had caught her leg in the gap between the train and the platform. The ANPC announced that it fined Metrorex for providing services that could endanger the consumers' safety and asked the subway operator to temporarily shut down the station and remedy the problems. In response, Metrorex issued a public statement saying that the company wasn’t told to take any measures during the talks with the ANPC inspectors and that no subway station would be shut down. The metro operator also addressed the complaint made by the woman who claims to have caught her leg in the gap between the train and the platform on January 12. “No such incidents have been identified during the first checks conducted by Metrorex by watching the recordings of the cameras directed towards the platforms of Piata Victoriei 1 and Piata Victoriei 2 stations, and no complaint was made to Metrorex in this sense,” reads the statement. Piata Victoriei is one of the biggest and most crowded subway stations in Bucharest. The Piata Victoriei 1 and Piata Victoriei 2 metro stations are transited by some 12,000 commuters daily.
