Chinese company wins tender to build EUR 1 bln coal-fueled power plant in Romania

China Huadian Engineering has won the tender to build a coal-fueled power plant in Romania, at Rovinari, with an investment of EUR 1 billion, according to Romania's Economy Ministry. The 500 MW power plant will create 500 jobs and be the first investment in a new thermal power plant fueled by coal in the last 20 years.

A team from the Chinese company was in Romania on July 23, when it visited Rovinari to gather technical data. The next step will be the setting up of the project team that will build the power plant. China Huadian Engineering is among the five largest state companies in China. So far it has built over 212 electrical power plants in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and is currently working on projects in Turkey. The tender for the Romanian project was organized in May and the Japanese Marubeni Corporation also submitted an offer.
