Businessman Ion Tiriac inaugurates EUR 700,000 sports compound offering free access for students

A sports complex worth some EUR 700,000 was recently opened in Bucharest, offering free access to students in 18 Bucharest schools. The investment was covered by businessman and former tennis player Ion Tiriac and by 20 companies on the local market.

The sports base is located on the former sports area Granitul (20-40 Ion Vlad St.), where the investment is set to increase to a couple of million euros in the next few years. It is called 'Baza Sportiva Ion Tiriac". “We have to educate not only children, but parents and teachers that sport is very important and should start as early as in kindergarten. We hope this will change in time,” said Ion Tiriac, at the center's inauguration. He said the new Government should introduce three mandatory hours of sport a week in the school program. The new center includes a football stadium with 265 seats, a sand football area, a beach volley area, a basketball area and three multi-sport fields, all on some 27,000 sqm. Some of the sponsors of the project are Allianz-Ţiriac, Enel, McCann Erikson, Midocar, Rehau, Viessmann and Ţiriac Auto, along with the District 2 City Hall. Access is free of charge. The compound is served by administrative personnel.
