Bucharest's planned 'suspended highway' to include at least two tunnels, one under Herastrau park, to avoid expropriation costs

The planned suspended highway in the Romanian capital city Bucharest will also include at least two tunnels, which is the cheapest option, compared to the expropriation of houses and landplots. Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu recently explained that the current version of the new infrastructure project features two tunnels, one underneath Herastrau park, and another one, underneath the Chitilia railways. The suspended highway will be located in the Northern part of the capital city, and so far the costs have been estimated at USD 750 million, via a public – private partnership. The Bucharest mayor has already discussed the partnership option with potential Chinese investors. The suspended highway, also called a flyover or an express road, will be 13 kilometres long, and will connect the Lacul Morii area in the West and the Colentina area in the East, all through the Northern part of the city. The Zonal Urban Plan for this project was recently approved by the Bucharest General Council. The Bucharest mayor hopes this project will be done in 2016, at the end of his current mandate. editor@romania-insider.com
