Bucharest’s main train station Gara de Nord to be connected via underground tunnels to two other stations

Romania’s railway company CFR plans to turn Bucharest’s main train station Gara de Nord into a transit station, including two tunnels linking it to other two train stations in the Romanian capital. “CFR wants to turn Gara de Nord in Bucharest into a transit station from where trains will cross the city through tunnels to East and South allowing a traffic, arrivals-departures, of 400 trains per day, 10 times more than in the present,” said Adrian Dragomirescu, CFR representatives on matters of infrastructure, quoted by local daily Wall-street.ro. The plan includes underground railways connecting with Obor and Progresul train stations. In November last year, George Micu, the general manager of CFR SA, said that Gara de Nord may be upgraded and turned into a transit station in a project worth EUR 1.5 billion, which could be implemented using European funds.
