Romanian ruling party leader: 2018 budget to stay below EU deficit target

Romania’s budget for 2018 will respect the 3% deficit target and the budget amendment will be positive, Social Democratic leader Liviu Dragnea said yesterday. His statement comes after analysts and EU officials had warned that Romania could exceed the EU-imposed 3% deficit target. Dragnea met on Monday evening with prime minister Mihai Tudose, other members of the Government and Calin Popescu Tariceanu, the president of the co-governing party. The draft budget for 2018 will go to the Parliament in November, to be adopted at the end of November or in the first days of December, Dragnea said. The budget deficit will remain below 3% this year, he added. After the meeting, the ruling party leader also said that Romanian state companies are interested in acquiring an energy company in the Republic of Moldova, because it is a very good economic measure. Government members will have technical meetings with representatives of the World Bank and the European Investment Bank for discussing about the large infrastructure projects.
