Over 1 million new houses built in Romania since 1990

Over one million new houses have been built in Romania after 1990. The number represents about 11% of the total stock of houses and apartments in Romania, which amounted to 8.9 million at the end of 2015, according to a study by local real estate consultancy firm DTZ Echinox based on data from the National Statistics Institute (INS). Most new apartments and houses have been built in Bucharest, and Ilfov, Constanta, Suceava, and Cluj counties in the past 26 years. Romania’s North-East area, one of the country’s poorest regions, has seen the highest number of new houses after 1990, with over 200,000 new units. The next region was the region South-Muntenia, with 146,000 units, and the South-East region, with over 67,000 homes. The best year for house construction was 2008, with over 67,000 new units delivered, while 2000 had the lowest volume of deliveries - only 26,400. Close to 47,000 new housing units were delivered in 2015, 4.5% more than in 2014.
