Work by Romanian Surrealist painter on auction at Sotheby’s this week

The work L'arriere Chat - Grand Chat by Romanian-born painter Victor Brauner will go on sale at Sotheby's Paris on March 24. The piece, painted in 1962, four years before the artist’s death, is estimated at EUR 50,000 – EUR 70,000. Victor Brauner was born in Piatra Neamt, in Northeastern Romania, in 1903. After helping establish the Dadaist review 75 HP in Bucharest, and being associated with the Dadaist and Surrealist review UNU, Brauner moved to Paris in 1930. Here he became friends with Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi and met French surrealist painter Yves Tanguy, who introduced him to the Surrealist movement. He had his first Paris solo show in 1934, and French writer André Breton wrote the introduction to the catalog for this exhibition. He returned to Romania in 1935, where he lived until 1938, when he moved back to France. He was included in the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme at the Galerie Maeght in Paris in 1947. His work was on display at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and in 1966. In Bucharest, his work can be seen in the permanent display of the National Art Museum MNAR. Worldwide, his work can be found in museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MoMa and The Met in New York, among others.
