The unemployment rate in Romania was 6.9 percent in 2009, compared with 5.8 percent in 2008, while the number of unemployed during the same period reached 681,000 people, up from 576,000 people in 2008, according to the European Commission's annual report on employment in Europe. The total number of employees in Romania last year stood at 9.175 million people out of a population of 21.4 million. editor@romania-insider.com
