Scottish designer creates tartan inspired by Romanian flag

A Scottish tartan designer recently created a tartan bearing the colors of Romania's flag, and launched the new creation at a charity event in Bucharest. After being launched in Edinburgh on December 1, the National Day of Romania, the 'Spirit of Romania' tartan by designer David McGill recently arrived in Bucharest. The tartan was also launched at the annual Caledonian Society Burns Supper organized on January 24 at the Radisson Hotel in Romania’s capital. The first ever ‘Romanian tartan’ kilt supplied by David McGill's International Tartans auctioned off for EUR 700 at the Caledonian Society Burns Supper. As well as cloth, the Spirit of Romania tartan is available in a range of accessories and gift-wear. International Tartans agreed to donate 10% from all sales to Light into Europe, a worldwide charity supporting blind and deaf children in Romania. Born after a conversation between Jim Hendry, a Scottish businessman living in Romania, and designer David McGill, the tartan is a combination of the Romanian flag’s red, yellow and blue, combined with the blue and white of the Scottish Saltire. The designer has created tartans inspired by the national flags of many other countries in the world. The tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours, and is particularly associated with Scotland. Irina Popescu, irina.popescu@romania-insider.com
