Romania will give 1,7 million pupils an apple a day during the 2010-2011 school year, part of the program 'Fruits in schools'. This program has a budget of EUR 13.4 million, out of which EUR 9.7 mln come from European funding, and EUR 3.7 million from the national budget. Children up to the 8th grade will get an apple on each school day for 93 days starting November 1st. This translates into 158 million apples. The entire program also includes trips to orchards and to vegetables farms, as well as educational activities teaching children about a healthy diet based on fruits and vegetables. After the agriculture ministry will decide on quality issues about the apples which will be distributed, each county will organize bids to get apple suppliers for the schools within the county. The program is similar to an existing one, called 'milk and croissant' (in Romanian: Cornul si laptele), which started out during the Social Democratic Party (PSD) ruling between 2000-2004.
