Old lighthouse in Eastern Romania to be restored with EU funds

The old lighthouse of the European Commission of the Danube (CED) in Sulina, which is currently a museum, will be restored with EU funds. Sulina is a town and free port in Tulcea county, being the easternmost point of Romania. The Tulcea county councilors approved on Tuesday, October 31, two decisions on the restoration of the old lighthouse, reports local Agerpres. The revamping will cost more than RON 10.2 million (EUR 2.2 million), including VAT, with most of the money coming from EU funds. The project will be funded through the 2014-2020 Regional Operational Program. The old lighthouse, which has a height of 17.34 meters, was built between 1869 and 1870, according to information posted on Sulina City Hall’s website. It is a symbol of the activity carried out by the European Commission of the Danube in the easternmost point of the country. Precursor to the Danube Commission and known as the first European organization with executive and administrative responsibilities in Danube river policy, the CED was established in 1856 and had an important role in the development of Sulina.
