Romania's nuclear power plant in Cernavoda was built to last to an earthquake with a magnitude of 8 degrees, while the earthquakes which can occur in Romania can have a maximum intensity of 7.5 degrees, according to Nuclearelectrica, which runs the Cernavoda unit. The statement follows a series of earthquakes in Japan, starting with an 8.9 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning, March 11. The earthquake triggered explosions at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. “In case of an earthquake, the power plant shuts down under nuclear safety conditions, meaning the following functions are ensured: the reactor is shut down, the active area is cooled down and the nuclear security parameters are monitored,” according to Nuclearelectrica. editor@romania-insider.com
