Romanian director on his Berlinale film, cast changes and dealing with preconceptions

Romanian filmmaker Marius Olteanu shares with Romania-Insider.com the story behind his first feature film, Monsters., which will have its world premiere at the Berlinale on Saturday (February 9). Monsters. is the only Romanian in the Berlinale selection this year, and will be screened in the Forum section. It also competes for the GWFF Best First Feature Award, won last year byRomanianAdina Pintilie’s Touch Me Not, also the Golden Bear winner.

Monsters. is a love story that has “a certain lightness.” The film had its starting point in the director’s short film Tie. The script, written by Olteanu, is based on a series of interviews with long-time couples “about what one is willing to do for love, about what you do when love is gone, about compromise.”
