Justice Ministry experts warn on possible EC sanctions on Romania's car pollution tax

Romania could be fined by the European Union following a possible infringement procedure against the country on the car pollution tax. If Romania doesn't change the car pollution tax and doesn't pay back the amounts to car owners, it could be fined, reads to a warning sent by the Ministry of Justice experts to the Government, according to Mediafax newswire. If the Romanian Government doesn't change this car tax, car owners across the country could win in court and the state would have to return the taxes paid so far, as well as interest on them and trial expenses, while the European Commission could also sanction the Romanian state. There are currently 40,000 law suits against the Romanian state on the car pollution tax. This tax is applied to cars which are registered in Romania for the first time, depending on their age and engine capacity, as well as on their pollution level. editor@romania-insider.com
