Grammy winner John Scofield joins lineup of Garana Jazz Festival in Romania

Two-time Grammy award winner John Scofield(pictured) will perform at this year’s edition of the Garana Jazz Festival, in Romania. The jazz festival, the most important open-air one in CEE, takes place between July 6 and July 9. US musician John Scofield and his project Überjam, the European quintet Enrico Rava-Tomasz Stanko and Swedish group Tonbruket are the first three names announced for this year’s lineup. Scofield won this year a Grammy for the best instrumental jazz album with his release Country for Old Men, as well as a Grammy for the best improvised jazz solo for the single I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. A fusion pioneer and a master of the bebop, funk and R&B genres, Scofield began his career in 1978. For three years he performed and recorded alongside acclaimed jazz figure Miles Davis. He recorded so far 30 albums, and collaborated with musicians such as Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Phil Lesh, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and many more. Scofield will perform in Garana together with drummer Dennis Chambers, guitar player Avi Bortnick and bassist Andy Hess, after making a stop at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. The public present at Garana will also get to see two European jazz legends, trumpeters Enrico Rava and Tomasz Stanko, performing alongside pianist Giovanni Guidi, bass guitar player Reuben Rogers and drummer Gerard Clever. Swedish group Tonbruket, who previously performed a Garana in 2010, is returning this year with a new album, Forevergreens, which they launched in the spring of 2016. Led by musician Dan Berglund, Tonbruket is set to bring the cross style and charm of Swedish jazz at the Garana festival. Tickets for the festival can be purchased online at biletmaster.ro. Festival passes cost RON 300 (EUR 66) and cover four concerts. A one-night ticket costs RON 85 (EUR 19). The program of the festival is being updated here. Over the past 20 years, more than 70,000 people and artists shared the jazz experience in the open-air setting of the small village of Garana, in Caras-Severin county, in western Romania. Some of the artists that performed at previous editions of the festival include Eberhard Weber, Jan Garbarek, Mike Stern, Tom Harrell, Charles Lloyd, Jean-Luc Ponty, Stanley Jordan, John Abercrombie, Miroslav Vitous, Zakir Hussain, Magnus Ostrom, Bugge Wesseltoft, Lars Danielsson, Avishay Cohen, Nils Petter Molvaer, Jack Dejohnette or Kimmo Pohjonen.
