Northern Romania: House where musician George Enescu was born to be refurbished

The George Enescu Memorial House in Liveni, in northeastern Romania's Botoşani county, will be restored as part of a cross-border project, Agerpres reported.

The County History Museum in Botoşani will receive EU funding for the project "History and Music - values that bring us together," accessed as part of the Joint Operational Programme Romania-Republic of Moldova 2014-2020.

The project has a total budget of EUR 1.3 million. The EU contribution covers 90% of the project, namely EUR 1.2 million, while the County History Museum in Botoşani will contribute EUR 424,187.

There are several houses across Romania where Enescu lived, which have been turned into museums. In Bucharest, the George Enescu Museum is housed in the Cantacuzino Palace, on Calea Victoriei. Enescu and his wife, Maruca Cantacuzino, lived between 1945 and 1946 in the house near the palace.

In Sinaia, the Luminiş Villa was built between 1923-1926, following the plan designed by the musician himself, with the aid of architect Radu Dudescu.

In Tescani, visitors can see the former manor house of the Romanian boyar family Rosetti-Tescanu, where Enescu completed his lyrical masterpiece, the opera Oedipe.

The house of Enescu's maternal grandfather in Mihăileni, where he spent part of his childhood, was rescued from demolition by a team of volunteer architects from the Order of Architects of Romania, Pro Patrimonio Foundation, and Remember Enescu Foundation.
