City halls in Romania submit applications to build 121 bike lanes with EUR 47mln

City halls across Romania will build 121 bicycle lanes in the country, according to the applications submitted by the city halls to the Environmental Fund Administration (AFM). For this number of projects submitted, the City halls have asked for a total of around EUR 47.1 million (RON 200.7 million), the amount required to build a bike lane varying between EUR 55,660 (RON 237,000) and EUR 587,000 (RON 2.5 million). Most of the requests came from rural areas. AFM launched on July 20, 2011, the first session for submitting applications for grants in the “Program for building bicycle lanes”. According to it, the maximum value admited for a project was up to around EUR 587,000 (RON 2.5 million) for towns and cities, and no more than EUR 352,000 (RON 1.5 million) for rural areas.
