Bucharest in 23 years: train-metro connection, double green areas, pedestrian bridges

In 23 years, the train stations in Bucharest will be connected through metro line, the number of green spaces will double, and the Romanian capital city will recover its urban identity, according to the ‘2035 Bucharest Strategy’ recently presented by Sorin Oprescu, the Mayor of Bucharest. The project, which details important investments in the city over the coming years, also includes the completion of the halted highway project, conducted in public-private partnership.

Gheorghe Patrascu, Bucharest’s chief architect, said that the most important strategic instrument for the ‘2035 Bucharest strategy’ is the General Urban Planning (PUG), which “will be discussed in the Council in a month or two”. In the vision of those working at the ‘2035 Bucharest Strategy’, the capital city will be, in 23 years, “an influential metropolis, European integrated through durability and character, reinvented in an intelligent and sensitive way, an open-ended community, a dynamic and creative capital city". The strategy also includes pedestrian bridges to link Romana and Rahova squares, and an integrated car park in the center of the capital city. The Bucharest Mayor also reminded that the metropolitan area will include Ilfov county to Ploiesti, part of Calarasi county, and an area of the Giurgiu county. The Romanian Prime Minister, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, who was also present at the presentation the project, said that the Bucharest Mayor can count on his support for the project.
