Bucharest mayor plans dedicated spaces for graffiti art

The Bucharest City Hall is looking to set up dedicated spaces for graffiti artists, mayor Gabriela Firea said, quoted by Economica.net. The mayor said she was not against these types of writings and drawings but she didn’t think it was normal that the city’s patrimony buildings are covered in graffiti. She also argued that these needed to be cleaned up right away. “I have a young son, I have friends who like this way of expression and I am not against them. This is why I discussed with the director of the ALPAB [e.n. Bucharest Parks and Lakes Administration] and with other colleagues to organize in parks or in certain areas an option for these youth to express themselves, to draw graffiti. But I am completely against graffiti on monument buildings, on patrimony buildings, on historical buildings,” Firea said. The mayor also said she had talks with youth organizations who were interested in the topic and wanted to organize graffiti competitions. “We will do it in an organized way, civilized, without damages to the way the city looks and without making patrimony buildings ugly. We need to highlight these buildings, not take away their beauty,” the mayor said.
