The historical movie Aferim! by Radu Jude was nominated to represent Romania in the competition for next year’s Oscar award for best movie in a foreign language, Romania’s National Cinematography Center (CNC) announced on Tuesday. The jury had to choose from a total of 14 movies this year, including other popular titles such as Corneliu Porumboiu’s Comoara/The Treasure and Tudor Giurgiu’s De ce eu?/Why Me? Aferim! is placed in XIX century Wallachia (Tara Romaneasca) and tells the story of a tax collector and his son in their quest to find a runaway slave. The movie brought Radu Jude the Silver Bear for best director award at this year’s Berlinale. Romanian Film Review – Once upon a time in Wallachia: Aferim!
